The TS American Mariner operated as a USCG training ship from 1941 to
1953. In 1953 it was transferred to the US Army and became the USAS
American Mariner; it supported the US Army/ARPA DAMP reentry tracking
project in 1959-63, during which it launched at least one Arcas rocket
off the coast of Cape Canaveral. In 1963-4 it was transferred briefly to
the USAF and then in Jan 1964 to the US Navy as USNS American Mariner.
The ship was retired in 1966.
