The space traveller data file is astro.html

This lists space travellers in order of first flight into space. The descriptions of the columns are given below.

The file trainee.html is a superset of the first file but in alphabetical order of English transliteration. It also includes individuals who were selected for spaceflight but did not, or have not yet, flown. I make no claim of completeness for this file.

Closely related to these files are the astronaut selection group files.

Column Descriptions

• Identification number. AS numbers are assigned in order of first flight above 80 km, starting with AS-00001 (Gagarin).

  
  All hominids who flew above 80 km altitude are included; non-sapiens space travelers are assigned numbers in separate series with prefix AA, listed separately at the end.

  
  For individuals making their first flight on the same launch, numbers are assigned in the traditional canonical order of mission role: commander, pilot, flight engineers, passengers. Typically when multiple people have the same role the launching agency assigns a sequence number (e.g. "Mission Specialist 1" to "Mission Specialist 5") that imposes an order.

  
  Individuals aboard an attempted space launch that did not reach space, and who were never aboard any other mission that did reach space, are given AF numbers, also listed separately at the end of the table. At the moment this list consists of Challenger crew members Smith, McAuliffe and Jarvis.

• Name Latin-alphabet transliteration of the current name of the individual. Family name is given first. For cultures where the family name is a surname (e.g. anglophone ones) the family name is followed by a comma and then the personal names (e.g. "Smith, John A."). For cultures where the family name is given before the personal names (e.g. Chinese) no comma is needed (e.g. "Yang Liwei", where Yang is the equivalent of the `surname' .)

  
  An asterisk before a middle forename indicates individual usually addressed by that name (e.g. "Cooper, Leroy *Gordon" is known as Gordon Cooper, not Leroy Cooper). When the individual is usually referred to by a nickname, this is given in single quotes.

  
  Birth surnames (or family names), where different from current surnames, are usually given in parentheses. However, see namechange.html for details of name changes for individuals.

• Rank gives the military rank (usually at time of most recent flight), and honorifics such as doctorates. Frequently encountered Russian ranks include "Pol" = Polkovnik (Colonel) and "Podpol" = Podpolkovnik (Lt-Col).
• Birth date - in principle, UTC, but not generally known to better than a day precision.
• Death date - blank if the individual is still alive as far as is known.
• Citizen - country code for the nation of which the individual was a citizen at the time of their most recent flight. Codes are those used in the General Catalog of Space Objects at planet4589.org/space/gcat/web/orgs/index.html I may not have been rigorous about distinguishing between RU (Russian Federation) and SU (Soviet Union).
• Native - country or region code for the location of which the individual is a native, i.e the birth location (which, of course, is not necessarily related to their later citizenship). For some of the larger countries I've tried to identify this down to a province or state level.
• S - status, a single letter code with meanings as follows:

  C	Candidate	(Used in the selections file only) Candidate who retired or was rejected prior to reaching active status in the group.
  D	Dead	dead
  R	Retired	retired from active astronaut status, but currently thought to be still alive.
  T	Transferred	(Used in the selections file only) transferred from one astronaut group (space agency) to another

• NFL - number of flights above 80 km.
• NRI - number of flights which were intended to go above 80 km, but including aborted missions.
• Duration - cumulative launch to landing time of all flights, including aborted ones. Format is days:hours:minutes:seconds.

  
  A trailing asterisk indicates that the astronaut was still in space at the time the table was last updated.

• G - gender, at time of most recent flight. Currently either M (male) or F (female), with X (other) reserved for possible future use.
• M - internal code, undocumented.
• ETH - ethnicity code. There are many additional ethnicities that one could track but I have focussed on a few which have frequently come up in queries like `how many [ethnicity X] astronauts have flown on [mission of type Y]?'. Multiple codes can be concatenated.

• Flag - identifies a few special cases of interest:

  Code	Meaning
  L	Landed on the Moon
  DS	Flew in deep space (beyond 150,000 km) but not L
  SO	Has flown on suborbital flights but no orbital ones

• ShortName - family name and initials, used where a shorter version of the name is needed.
• Missions - comma-separated list of role codes, showing all flights (including aborts) for that astronaut. A role code is of the form MCODE/RTAG, where MCODE is the mission code and RTAG is a `role tag'. See roles.html for more details.

  
  In the list of trainees, a role code preceded by an asterisk (e.g. "*NS19/A1") indicates assignment to a flight that has not happened yet. Note that I make no attempt at completeness for such assignments.

• Uname Full name of the individual, in the script of the individual's country of citizenship.
